Joyce Carol Oates of the United States has published short stories, poetry, essays, and many, many, works, which include, On Boxing and You Must Remember This. Her miniature narratives several of which have appeared in issues of Exile have appeared under the title The Assignation.
STEPHEN PENDER - Concepción
Lawrence Hill of Canada worked for several years as a journalist. He now writes fiction. Two of his stories have appeared in the literary quarterly, Descant. Concepción is his third published story.
MICHEL TREMBLAY - The Guid-Sisters
Michel Tremblay of Canada worked is a well-known playwright. Les Belles-Soeurs was a great success commercially, aesthetically, and politically not the least because of Tremblays masterful use of joual, the "corrupt" street-smart argot of the working class. The play has been translated into English, and performed in English, but an English too proper, too flat, too devoid of disfiguring beauty. This translation into Scots-English is the closest approximation of the original to date.
