TRISTAN BERNARD - The Exile
Tristan Bernard of France died at the age of eighty-one in 1947. He wrote forty plays and fifty novels, and was known as the "French Mark Twain." He was best known for The Little Café, the play that launched Maurice Chevalier on his movie career, and As It Is Spoken, which was a standard at the Comédie Française. The Exile, written in 1932, is the shortest play ever produced.

Among his twenty-two books that explore life along the Italian frontier are Materada, The Fifth Season, The Town Of Miriam, Shameful Liasons, Heavenly Supper, A Better Life, and Alle spalle di Trieste. So far, only Heavenly Supper has appeared in English.
