RAISE YOU TEN

For
Ron Haggart
journalist
and
William Kennedy
who, as a reporter, never forgot
that journalism is storytelling,
and as a storyteller, never forgot
that he was a reporter

As a man of letters, as a poet, novelist, and personal journalist, Barry Callaghan is a singular presence in Canada. Always a storyteller, a faneur "secretly attuned to the history of the place and in covert search of adventure," he is also a public scholar in the tradition of Edmund Wilson (his extraordinary portrait of Wilson concludes this volume).

Unflinching before the harsh complexities of our time, Raise You Tenis, as said by the Globe and Mail: "Literary criticism and cultural history of a high order, in turn joyous, acerbic, celebratory."

Novelist, poet and publisher Barry Callaghan is also one of Canada’s great journalists. He has received every major award that the country’s journalists can offer - more than a dozen National Magazine awards, seven of them gold - and in the United States he has been given the White Award in New York, the Lowell Thomas Award and the Pushcart Prize. He was awarded the inaugural W.O. Mitchell Award in 1998. His works include Hogg: The Poems and Drawing; The Black Queen Stories; When Things Get Worst; A Kiss is Still a Kiss, the memoir Barrelhouse Kings, and his first volume of collected non-fiction Raise You Five (2005).

"...piercing lucidity, uncompromising intelligence, a depth and intensity of feeling perhaps best denoted by Lorca's term duende ... the gift of great criticism." - Globe and Mail

"...a fellow with big appetites for food, drink, experience and storytelling, a kind of pugnacious saint." - George Fetherling

"Along with Atwood and Richler, one of Canada’s pre-eminent persons of letters." - Quill and Quire

"Callaghan is a man for all genres - poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, and translation. An honest gambler, he admits to a fondness for cards and horses: poker face, bluff, trump shot and gallop keep his prose varied and interesting at every turn." - Books in Canada
