MARIE-CLAIR BLAIS – The Testament of Jean-Le-Maigre to His Brothers

Marie-Claire Blais of Canada is the author of ten novels, works for the stage, and poems. The most recently translated novels are: David Sterne, The Manuscripts of Pauline Archange, The Wolf (a section of which appeared in Exile, Vol. 1 No. 1), and St. Lawrence Blues (two long chapters appeared in Exile, Vol. 1, No. 4).

YEHUDA AMICHAI – Travels of a Latter-Day Benjamin of Tudela

Yehuda Amichai of Israel is the author of several collections of poetry, short stories, and a novel, Not Of This Time, Not Of This Place. Three volumes of his poetry have been published in English including: in the Penguin Modern European Poets series, Poems, and Songs of Jerusalem & Myself.

DAVID ANNESLEY – Themselves Such and Such

David Annesley of Canada has had his drawings of literary and political figures appear in the major magazines of Canada and the United States: Saturday Night, MacLean’s, The New York Times, Atlantic. For four years he was the resident artist for the book page of the Toronto Telegram, where his career began.

JAMES W. NICHOL – Him

James W. Nichol of Canada is a playwright. Many of his works have been performed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Purr, his first published play, appeared in Exile Vol. 2, No. 3 & 4.

JOYCE MANSOUR – Eight Poems

Joyce Mansour of France has long been associated with the Surrealists. Her long story, Jules Cesar, appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No.2.

IRVING LAYTON – Seduction of and by a Civilized Frenchwoman

Irving Layton of Canada is the most prolific poet in the country. A few years ago his Collected Poems were published, and since then, Engagements (prose), Lovers and Lesser Men, The Pole Vaulter, The Unwavering Eye and The Darkening Fire.

ANDRÉ FRENAUD – Eight Poems

André Frenaud of France is one of that country’s finest poets, and he is unjustly neglected abroad. His publications include: Il n’y a pas de paradis, Le saint face, and Depuis toujours déjà.

MERCÈ RODOREDA – A Letter

Mercè Rodoreda of Spain is a Catalan novelist, translated into many languages. The Pidgeon Girl has been published in England, and two of her stories appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No.2.
