YEHUDA AMICHAI – Seven Laments for the Fallen in the War

Yehuda Amichai of Israel is the author of several collections of poetry, short stories, and novels. Several of his works have been published in English in the Penguin Modern European Poets series. These include Poems, Songs of Jerusalem & Myself, and All My Wars, translated by Amichai and Ted Hughes.

RON PADGETT – Arrive by Pullman

Ron Padgett of the United States work include: Toujour l’amour and Crazy Compositions. Arrive by Pullman, the poem in this issue, appeared among others by Padgett in vol. 3, No. _; pages in that publication were transposed, ruining the order and effect – that situation is her rectified.

JACQUES FERRON – The Cart

Jacques Ferron of Canada is among the most important writers from Quebec. His works in English include Tales From An Uncertain Country, the novels Papa Boss (Exile, Vol. 1, No. 3) and Quince Jam (Exile, Vol. 2, No. 1) stories, and a long portrait of dramatist Claude Gauvreau (Exile, Vol. 3, No. 2). MARY MEIGS – Illustrations For Two Novels By Marie-Claire Blais

Mary Miegs of the United States is a painter who has had one-man shows in Boston, New York and Paris. She is the long-time associate of Marie-Claire Blais and her book, with an introduction by Mille Blais – Illustrators Mary Miegs: For Two Novels, The Manuscripts Of Pauline Archange and St. Lawrence Blues – will be published shortly.

ANDRÉ FRENAUD – Sixteen Poems

André Frenaud of France is one of that country’s most distinguished poets. His publications include: Il n’y a pas de paradis, Le sainte face, and Dupuis toujours déjà. Our translations, by John Montague and Evelyn Robson, are a part of the celebration of his seventieth year.

PAUL CÉLAN – Eighteen Poems

Paul Celan of Germany during the war was in a forced labor camp. He now lives in Paris, has translated Rimbaud, Valéry, Mandelstam, Essenin, and has published seven collections of poetry, among them: The Sand From The Urns, Language Grilles, The None Rose and Thread Suns.
