Yehuda Amichai of Israel is the author of several collections of poetry, short stories, and a novel, Not Of This Time, Not Of This Place. Volumes of his poetry have been published in English including: in the Penguin Modern European Poets series, Poems, and Songs of Jerusalem & Myself.

 

JACQUES FERRON - Quince Jam

Jacques Ferron of Canada is one of the most important writers from Quebec. He has published collections of stories, novels, and plays. Recognized as a major voice of Quebec nationalism, he founded the Rhinoceros party in 1963 and has written numerous political and historical essays. Tales From An Uncertain Country, Dr. Cotnoir, and Papa Boss (Exile, No. 3) are among his translated works.

 

WILLIAM RONALD - A Doll’s House with Damp Walls

William Ronald of Canada is outstanding among painters in the country. He was the founder of that group known as Painters Eleven. His work is in numerous private collections, national and international, and all the major North American Museums: the Albright-Knox, The Museum of Modern Art, N.Y., the National Gallery of Canada, the Whitney Museum, the Carnegie Institute, the Guggenheim Museum, N.Y., the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller collection. A retrospective of his work, titled: William Ronald – A Quarter Century Of His Work has traveled to various museums.

 

MARY SODERSTROM - I’m Sorry Mrs. Straus

Mary Soderstrom of the United States is a writer and I’m Sorry Mrs. Straus is her first published story.

 

JOHN MONTAGUE - A Graveyard In Queens; Slow Dance

John Montague of Ireland has published several collections of poetry, and two, A Chosen Light and Tides, appeared in the U.S. under the imprint of the Swallow Press. The Rough Field, a cycle of poems dealing with the Ulster upheaval, has been published in Ireland and England.

 

YANNIS RITSOS - Twenty Poems

Yannis Ritsos of Greece is the most prolific of modern Greek poets. Though not well known in English, he has written over twenty-five books of poetry. He has been translated widely on the Continent and Louis Aragon has called him the greatest living European poet. Our translators are Nikos and Gwendolyn Tsingos of Canada. Mr. Tsingos, born in Greece, is a musician and singer. His wife is the poet Gwendolyn MacEwen.

Joyce Carol Oates of the United States, now a resident of Canada, is the author of many novels, collections of stories, essays and poems. JAMES W. NICHOL - Purr

James W. Nichol of Canada is a playwright. Many of his works have been performed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Purr is his first published play.

 

ROBERT ZEND - A Bunch of Proses

Robert Zend of Canada has published one collection of poems, From Zero to One. His long poems, OAB and A Bouquet To Bip, appeared in Exile, Numbers 1 and 3.

 

BARRY CALLAGHAN - The Cleft of Light

Barry Callaghan of Canada is a writer and editor.

 

JOHN THOMAS - Whole Story

John Thomas of Canada is a writer and this is his first published story.

 

GREGORY O’DONOGHUE - Wrecked Head

Gregory O’Donoghue of Ireland is a poet whose work has appeared in many journals and The Faber Book Of Irish Verse.

 

AI - Two Poems

Ai of the United States has had her poetry published in many journals. Her first collection, Cruelty, was published last year.

 

ROCHELLE OWENS - The Joe Chronicles

Rochelle Owens of the United States is among the most innovative playwrights and poets of her generation. Her published works include, Futz And What Came After and The Karl Marx Play, and several books of poetry.

 

MERCÈ RODOREDA -Two Stories

Mercé Rodoreda is the finest contemporary Catalan novelist. Her best known book, La Plaça del Diamant, has been translated into seven languages, and was published in Britain under the title, The Pigeon Girl. David Rosenthal, our translator, lives in Barcelona. His own first book of poems, Eyes On The Street (Barlenmir House, New York), includes a group of Catalan poets in translation.

JOYCE MANSOUR - Jules Cesar

Joyce Mansour of France was born in England of Egyptian parents. After the publication in France of Chris, her first collection of poems, she became associated with the Surrealists and has contributed to their reviews since the 1950s. Jules Cesar is one of the two stories in her book, Histoires Nocives (Gallimard).

 

YANNIS RITSOS - Helen

Yannis Ritsos of Greece is the most prolific of Greek poets. He has written over twenty-five books and has been translated widely on the continent. He was recently nominated for the Nobel Prize. Our translators are Nikos and Gwendolyn Tsingos of Canada. Their translation of Twenty Poems appeared in Exile, Vol. 2 No. 1.

 

JEAN BENOÎT - Objects

Jean Benoît, born in Canada, has been a resident of Paris since 1947 and a member of the surrealist movement for sixteen years. This is the first time such an extensive collection of photographs of his work has been published. They are arranged in order from the earliest to the most recent. The description by the artist of The Necrophiliac first appeared in Midi-Minuit Fantastique, and the commentary by Vincent Bounoure on The Object To Contain A Mummified Head in Archibras. All texts were furnished in letters from Jean Benoît to Ray Ellenwood, who did the translations.

 

DAVID SHAPIRO - The Lighthouse

David Shapiro of the United States is a young short story writer. This is his first published story. He is, at present, living in Canada.

John Montague of Ireland has published a collection of short stories, Death Of A Chieftan And Other Stories, and has edited The Faber Book Of Irish Verse. He has published five volumes of poetry, Poisoned Lands And Other Poems, A Chosen Light, Tides, The Rough Field, and A Slow Dance

 

MORLEY CALLAGHAN - Season Of The Witch

Morley Callaghan of Canada was the author of several collections of short stories, a reminiscence, That Summer in Paris, and eleven novels, including The Loved and the Lost, The Many Colored Coat, A Fine And Private Place, and A Passion in Rome. His work has been translated into every major language. Chapters from this novel appeared in Exile, Vol. 1, No. 1, under the working title, In The Dark And The Light Of Lisa.
