MARIE-CLAIR BLAIS - The Testament of Jean-Le-Maigre to His Brothers

Marie-Claire Blais of Canada is the author of ten novels, works for the stage, and poems. The most recently translated novels are: David Sterne, The Manuscripts of Pauline Archange, The Wolf (a section of which appeared in Exile, Vol. 1 No. 1), and St. Lawrence Blues (two long chapters appeared in Exile, Vol. 1, No. 4).

 

YEHUDA AMICHAI - Travels of a Latter-Day Benjamin of Tudela

Yehuda Amichai of Israel is the author of several collections of poetry, short stories, and a novel, Not Of This Time, Not Of This Place. Three volumes of his poetry have been published in English including: in the Penguin Modern European Poets series, Poems, and Songs of Jerusalem & Myself.

 

DAVID ANNESLEY - Themselves Such and Such

David Annesley of Canada has had his drawings of literary and political figures appear in the major magazines of Canada and the United States: Saturday Night, MacLean’s, The New York Times, Atlantic. For four years he was the resident artist for the book page of the Toronto Telegram, where his career began.

 

JAMES W. NICHOL - Him

James W. Nichol of Canada is a playwright. Many of his works have been performed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Purr, his first published play, appeared in Exile Vol. 2, No. 3 & 4.

 

JOYCE MANSOUR - Eight Poems

Joyce Mansour of France has long been associated with the Surrealists. Her long story, Jules Cesar, appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No.2.

 

IRVING LAYTON - Seduction of and by a Civilized Frenchwoman

Irving Layton of Canada is the most prolific poet in the country. A few years ago his Collected Poems were published, and since then, Engagements (prose), Lovers and Lesser Men, The Pole Vaulter, The Unwavering Eye and The Darkening Fire.

 

ANDRÉ FRENAUD - Eight Poems

André Frenaud of France is one of that country’s finest poets, and he is unjustly neglected abroad. His publications include: Il n’y a pas de paradis, Le saint face, and Depuis toujours déjà.

 

MERCÈ RODOREDA - A Letter

Mercè Rodoreda of Spain is a Catalan novelist, translated into many languages. The Pidgeon Girl has been published in England, and two of her stories appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No.2.

SUSAN MUSGRAVE - Three Poems

Susan Musgrave of Canada is one of the leading young poets in the country. Her books include: Grave-Dirt, Selected Strawberries and The Impstone. She has also published a children’s book, Gullband.

 

JACQUES FERRON - Three Stories & Claude Gauvreau

Jacques Ferron of Canada is one of the most important writers from Quebec. His works include Tales From An Uncertain Country, and two novels, Papa Boss (Exile, Vol. 1, No.3) and Quince Jam (Exile, Vol. 2, No. 1).

 

CLAUDE GAUVREAU - Ode to the Enemy and Three Dramatic Objects

Claude Gauvreau of Canada died in 1971. He published very few of his poems, plays, essays and manifestos, but he was the most influential of the Quebec Automatistes, whose roots were surrealism. In Exile, Vol. 1, No. 2, we published The Good Life, a play, and Reflections Of A Young Dramatist.

 

JENI COUZYN - Four Poems

Jeni Couzyn of South Africa has lived and worked in London, England, but now lives on Canada’s West Coast. Her books of poetry include: Flying, Monkey’s Wedding and Christmas in Africa.

 

PHILIPPE JACCOTTET - Three Poems

Philippe Jaccottet of France is highly regarded among the post war generation of poets in that country. His collected Poésie (1946-67) was published in 1971.

 

JAIME GIL DE BIEDMA - Four Poems

Jamie Gil de Biedma of Spain is among the finest poets in that country. He has published only a small amount of work, including Diary Of A Seriously Ill Writer.

 

DENNIS SILK - The Drop and the Doll’s House

Dennis Silk of Israel was born in London, England. He has been living in Jerusalem since 1955. He has published prose, a book of poems, A Face Of Stone, and a Jerusalem anthology, Retrievements, in English. His works have also been published in Hebrew.

 

EYDI CAINES-FLOYD - The Silly Shepherd

Eydi Caines-Floyd of Canada is an illustrator and storyteller. The Silly Shepherd or The Saga Of Shades Simon is her first published work.

Joyce Carol Oates of the United States, now resident of Canada is the author of many novels, collections of stories, essays and poems. Among these are her novels The Goddess and Other Women and The Assassins.

 

MARY MELFI - Seven Poems

Mary Melfi of Canada had poems in Exile Vol. 2, N1. Her first volume of poetry was: The Dance, The Cage and The Horse.

 

JOHN MONTAGUE - The Great Cloak

John Montague of Ireland has edited the Faber Book Of Irish Verse and published short stories, translations and poetry.

 

ALEXANDRE AMPRIMOZ - Each Asparagus is an Angel

Alexandre of Canada has published a number of stories and critical pieces in both French and English. He is gathering together stories for his first collection.

 

DAVID ROSENBERG - Blues of the Sky

David Rosenberg of the United States has been widely published there, as well as in England and Canada. During a residence in Canada he edited The Ant’s Forefoot and appeared in Canada First: New Canadian Poets. Blues of the Sky was published in 1976 by Harper & Row.

 

RÉJEAN DUCHARME - The Zone of Hardy Deciduous Forests

Réjean Ducharme of Canada is probably this country’s best known unknown writer. His published novels include L’Avalée des Avalés, Le Nez qui Vogue, L’Océantume and, Enfantômes.

 

JOE ROSENBLATT - Two Poems

Joe Rosenblatt of Canada is the author of The LSD Leacock, Winter of the Luna Moth, Bumblebee Dithyramb and Virgins and Vampires. Five of his poems and drawings were published in Exile Vol. 1, No. 4.

 

LOUIS DE NIVERVILLE - Family Album

Louis de Niverville of Canada is a painter whose work is in major collections in the U.S. and Canada. Family Album is a work which may comprise over 60 objects when completed.

 

YANNIS RITSOS - Orestes

Yannis Ritsos of Greece has written over twenty-five books and been translated widely on the continent. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize. Translations of twenty of his poems appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No. 1 and his Helen in vol. 2, No. 3&4.

RON PADGETT - Three Poems

Ron Padgett of the United States has published two books of poetry, Toujours l’amour and Crazy Compositions, as well as Antlers in the Treetop, a collaborative novel with Tom Veitch. Co-founder of Full Court Press, he has translated the complete poetry of Blaise Cendrars.

Michael Lally of the United States is a poet whose publications include: My Life, Rocky Dies Yellow, Dues, Sex/The Swing Era and Catch My Breath.

Gerard Malanga of the United States lives in New York and the Massachusetts Berkshires. His most recent publications are Incarnations: Poems 1965-71 and Rosebud.

 

BARRY CALLAGHAN - The Cleft of Light

Barry Callaghan of Canada is a writer and editor. A selection from The Cleft Of Light appeared in Exile, Vol. 2, No. 2.
