PATRICK KAVANAGH - Lough Derg

Patrick Kavanagh of Ireland, who died in 1967, was the most important Irish poet between Yeats and the contemporary writers Montague, Heaney and Kinsella. He is best known for Tarry Flynn and his long poem The Great Hunger. Lough Derg was unpublished during his lifetime.

 

GYORGY MOLDOVA - The Sixth Book of Moses

Gyorgy Moldova of Hungary is one of the country’s bestsellers. His collection of humorous writings, Hungarian Atom (1978) won the Grand Prix for foreign humour in France. His serious writings include The Holy Cow, Once You’ve Caught a Whiff of Engine Smoke, and the novels Forty Preachers and St. Emery March.

 

IRVING LAYTON - Three Poems

Irving Layton of Canada is one of the most prolific poets in the country. He has published The Covenants, Droppings from Heaven, The Love Poems of Irving Layton, The Tamed Puma, The Tight-Rope Dance, The Uncollected Poems 1936-1959, For Thy Neighbours In Hell, and Europe and Other Bad News; and Wild Peculiar Joy (McLelland & Stewart). Illustration accompanying the poems is a silver coin from the period of Bar-Kokhba. It shows the façade of the Hekhal, the Sanctuary.

 

ROBERT MARTEAU - Interlude

Robert Marteau of Canada and of France has published fiction and poetry: Royaumes, Travaux sur la Terre, Sibylles, Atlante, Pentcote and Traite du Blanc et des Teintures.

 

MARGARET ATWOOD - Murder in the Dark

Margaret Atwood of Canada is the author of several novels including: The Edible Woman, Surfacing, Lady Oracle, Life Before Man, Bodily Harm and several volumes of poetry including: Two-Headed Poems, True Stories and Murder in the Dark.

 

ISTVAN CSURKA - Happening

Istvan Csurka of Hungary is a dramaturg and short story writer. Among his story collections are Extension No. 105 (1964), A Horse Is Also Human (1968), and In the Stream of Light (1972). His Lament for a Janitor is one of the finest Hungarian plays of the seventies.

 

DIANE KEATING - Four Poems

Diane Keating of Canada has published several books of poems which include In Dark Places and Mad Apples.

 

BARRY CALLAHAN - Seven Last Words

Barry Callahan of Canada is a poet, translator and short story writer. He has published The Hogg Poems and Drawings, translations from the work of Robert Marteau: Atlante,Treatise on Tincture and White, Interlude, and translations from the Serbian poet Miodrag Pavlovic, Singing At The Whirlpool. His The Black Queen Stories appeared in 1982. These poems set in Leningrad are part of a sequence, Seven Last Words.

 

JOSEF SKVORECKY - Oh, Maytime Witch

Josef Skvorecky of Canada is an internationally acclaimed novelist and short story writer who emigrated from Czechoslovakia after the Soviet Invasion in 1968. Winner of the 1980 Neustadt International Prize in Literature, he has published several novels, including The Cowards, Miss Silver’s Past, and The Bass Saxophone. Oh, Maytime Witch is part of a collection of short stories.

Victor-Levy Beaulieu of Canada is one of the country’s most prolific writers. He is the author of A Quebecois Dream Jos Connaissant (Canada Council prize for translation, 1982).

 

NORMAN SYMONDS - Sylvia: An Adult Fairy Tale

Norman Symonds of Canada, one of the most innovative contemporary composers, has had his work performed by many major orchestras. Among his important works are: The Gift of Thanksgiving (1981), Episode at Big Quill: A Prairie Legend (1979), The Fall of the Leaf (1984).

 

SUSANA WALD - Five Drawings

Susana Wald of Canada has exhibited her own work and worked in collaboration with Ludwig Zeller, appearing in several books, including: Mirages, Circe’s Mirror, and Wanderers in the Mandala.

 

MIODRAG PAVLOVIC - A Voice Locked in Stone

Miodrag Pavlovic of Yugoslavia is a poet, translator, essayist, and short story writer. Among his works are: 87 Pesaura, Oktave, and Svetli I Tamni Praznici. Singing at the Whirlpool was published in 1983.

 

PETER SCOTT LAWRENCE - Concerning the Egg and Minutes of an Evening

Peter Scott Lawrence of Canada is a fiction writer. These are his first two published stories.

 

LUDWIG ZELLER - Eight Collages

Ludwig Zeller of Canada has exhibited widely in this country and abroad and published several books, including: Woman in Dream, Visions and Wounds, 50 Collages, Alphacollage: An Alphabet of Twenty-seven Letters, and In the Country of the Antipodes.

 

ROBERT ZEND - OAB

Robert Zend of Canada is among the most experimental writers in the country. His works include From Zero to One, My Friend, Jeŕonimo, Arbormundi, and Beyond Labels.

 

JACQUES FERRON - The Penniless Redeemer

Jacques Ferron of Canada is outstanding among Québec’s novelists. His works include The Cart, Papa Boss, Quince Jam, and The Penniless Redeemer.

 

JENI COUZYN - The One Entering

Jeni Couzyn of Canada and England has published several collections, including Flying, Monkey’s Wedding, Christmas in Africa, House of Changes and Life by Drowning: Selected Poems.

 

NICOLE BROSSARD - Lovers

Nicole Brossard of Canada has published volumes of prose and poetry: La Partie pour le tout, French Kiss, Sold-out, Un livre, These Our Mothers.

 

WILLIAM RONALD - Six Drawings

William Ronald of Canada was a founding member of the country’s pioneer group of abstract painters, Painters Eleven. His "portraits" of the sixteen Canadian Prime Ministers have been presented at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

 

MICHEL BEAULIEU - Semblances

Michel Beaulieu of Canada is in the forefront of important young poets from Québec. He has published FM, Anecdotes and Oracle des ombres.

 

SEÁN VIRGO - Selakhi

Seán Virgo of Canada has published two collections of poetry, Pieces for the Old Earth Man, Death Watch of Skidegate Narrows, and a collection of stories, White Lies and Other Fictions.

 

DIANE KEATING - Two Poems

Diane Keating of Canada has published several volumes of poetry including In Dark Places and No Birds or Flowers.

 

INGRID SROLOVITZ - Six Drawings

Ingrid Srolovitz of Canada is an artist.

 

MARGARET AVISON - Fourteen Poems

Margaret Avison of Canada is among the most important poets in the Country. Her works include Sunblue and Winter Sun: The Dumbfounding – Poems 1940-66.
